Both a gallery of experimental type design and a collection of essays by Peter Bil’ak this book celebrates the beauty of experimental typography. For The Importance of Play I wanted to combine a clean sans serif typeface with bold colors and a dramatic layout to maintain legibility while also referencing the theme of the book. Text pushed to the border of the page and the occasional moment of essay text overlaid on didactic information cause intentional moments of discomfort for the reader. This discomfort mixed with the otherwise traditional layout of the type allows for a reading experience unique to this book as well as a strong identity system.
